Public Sector Government Funding Applications

Demand for public sector buildings such as schools and colleges are increasing and the UK Government has recognised the need to provide funding available in order to maintain existing educational spaces and provide new buildings where required. The Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) is an annual bidding process for academies, sixth-form colleges and non-diocesan schools which is aimed at providing capital funding for schools or colleges with a significant need for condition improvement keeping our educational establishments safe and functional.

To be eligible for CIF, the criteria can be seen below:

  • An open academy, sixth-form college or non-diocesan VA school
  • A school with a signed academy order
  • Multi-Academy Trusts (MATs) with 5 or more academies and more than 3,000 pupils cannot apply for CIF. These trusts will receive a School Condition Allocation (SCA) to invest across their estate.

There are a number of other funding streams available to such educational establishments, a few of which are detailed below:

  • Priority Schools Building Programme – This is a capital funded project, which will undertake rebuilding and refurbishment projects across 277 schools from 2015 to 2021.
  • Salix – This is an interest-free Government funding to the public sector to improve energy efficiency, reduce carbon emissions and lower energy bills. Salix is funded by the Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, the Department for Education, the Welsh Government and the Scottish Government and was established in 2004 as an independent, publicly funded company, dedicated to providing the public sector with loans for energy efficiency projects.
  • School Condition Allocation (SCA) – Local authorities, larger MATs and larger voluntary aided school bodies receive direct SCA to invest in priorities across the schools for which they are responsible.
